Affordable Quadrivalent HPV Vaccine More Effective Against Cervical Cancer: Jitendra Singh

New Delhi, Dec 17 (NationPress) The quadrivalent HPV vaccine, created in India, is not only affordable but also shows greater effectiveness against cervical cancer, stated Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology Jitendra Singh on Tuesday.

Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer in India, contributing to nearly one-fourth of the global cervical cancer fatalities, despite being largely preventable.

“The quadrivalent HPV vaccine is a significant advantage for the Indian populace, where the death toll among women due to cervical cancer is approximately one lakh annually, with over 90 percent of these women having a history of HPV infection,” Singh remarked during the Health Conclave organized by NDTV at Hotel Hyatt.

Singh revealed India’s first indigenous vaccine, “CERVAVAC”, aimed at preventing cervical cancer, which was launched in September 2022.

CERVAVAC, developed by the Department of Biotechnology within the Ministry of Science and Technology, is distinctive due to its quadrivalent nature, making it highly effective against HPV types 6, 11, 16, and 18, which are closely linked to cervical cancer in women, Singh highlighted.

Moreover, Singh strongly endorsed the utilization of the HPV vaccine and mentioned that its administration is straightforward, with a recommended two-dose regimen for girls under 15 years and a three-dose regimen for those above 15.

The Minister emphasized India’s progress in preventive healthcare, women’s health, and indigenous vaccine development during his speech at the “Together Against HPV” conclave.

This event was centered around the national effort to combat cervical cancer, which continues to pose a major health dilemma. The Minister also asserted that India is now globally recognized for its initiatives in preventive healthcare.

He reiterated that prioritizing women’s health is crucial for achieving India's vision for 2047, emphasizing women-led development as a national goal. Singh also addressed the necessity of confronting the taboos and stigma surrounding diseases like cervical cancer, especially in rural regions.
