New Delhi/Amaravati, May 23 (NationPress) Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu had an important meeting with Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitaraman in New Delhi on Friday, where he presented a proposal requesting the Centre's support for the Polavaram–Banakacherla Link Project.
The initiative seeks to redirect surplus water from the Godavari River to areas facing water scarcity in south-central Andhra Pradesh. The project will implement lift irrigation and tunnel systems to connect various regions in three distinct phases. A comprehensive financing strategy has been outlined, building on previous discussions with the Finance Ministry, as stated by the Chief Minister's Office (CMO).
The Chief Minister expressed that the project promises to assist millions in drought-affected areas and could serve as a pioneering model for river-linking projects across India. A detailed Project Report (DPR) is anticipated by June 2025.
Additionally, he provided copies of the proposal to Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Paatil, urging for inter-departmental collaboration to expedite the project.
During a previous meeting with Paatil, the Chief Minister had also presented the proposal for the Polavaram–Banakacherla Link Project.
This project aims to channel excess floodwater from the Godavari into drought-stricken regions through a three-phase water transfer system. The plan includes the construction of the Bollapalle reservoir, lift irrigation systems, and tunnels through the Nallamala hills.
The Chief Minister emphasized that the project aligns with national missions such as Jal Jeevan, Blue Revolution, and Make in India. He also asserted Andhra Pradesh’s rightful access to surplus water as a downstream state following the bifurcation.
Naidu further engaged with Minister of State for Science and Technology and Earth Sciences, Dr. Jitendra Singh, presenting a detailed proposal aimed at transforming Andhra Pradesh into a central hub for space manufacturing and innovation. He requested the Centre's backing for this initiative.
The proposal details the establishment of two state-backed Space Cities—one adjacent to the ISRO SHAR spaceport and another near Lepakshi—to function as integrated centers for satellite production, launch vehicle development, and industry collaboration.
The Chief Minister also informed the Union Minister of the appointment of former ISRO Chairman Dr. S. Somanath as the Honorary Adviser on Space Technology for the Andhra Pradesh government. His expertise will guide the state's efforts in creating a globally competitive space ecosystem.
"With a strategic location, industrial strengths, and future-ready infrastructure, Andhra Pradesh is entirely dedicated to enhancing India’s space sector. We seek the Centre’s recognition and collaboration in this transformative journey," he remarked.
