Kochi, July 17 (NationPress) The Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) has gained national recognition after its seed production technology for Giant Trevally, a valuable marine species, was listed among the top five fisheries innovations in India by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR).

This accolade underscores the technology's crucial role in promoting sustainable mariculture in India. The innovation was officially presented by Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan.

“This technology is poised to greatly boost the production of this commercially significant species, thereby enhancing India's seafood security and contributing to the blue economy,” remarked Dr. Grinson George, Director of CMFRI.

The Giant Trevally (Caranx ignobilis) is a fast-growing and resilient species known for its adaptability in various marine and estuarine environments, including cages, pens, and coastal ponds. Its capacity to endure a broad spectrum of salinity and water quality, along with its rapid growth, makes it an excellent candidate for marine aquaculture. This species is also highly sought after in the seafood market, fetching between Rs 400 to 700 per kg.

When compared to pompanos, the Giant Trevally exhibits superior growth, reaching 500 g in just five months and up to 1 kg within eight months using pellet-based feed following CMFRI’s standardized farming protocols.

The breakthrough was achieved by scientists at CMFRI’s Vizhinjam Regional Centre, who tackled significant challenges related to the species’ preference for open waters and its complex reproductive biology.
