New Delhi, March 4 (NationPress) Obesity is not merely a result of genetics; it is significantly influenced by health choices and lifestyle factors, health specialists stated on Tuesday, underscoring that it represents a critical health issue rather than just a cosmetic dilemma.
On the occasion of World Obesity Day, Dr. Nikhil Tandon, the Head of the Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, elaborated that circadian rhythm disorders, unhealthy eating habits, sedentary lifestyles, and societal stressors are primary factors contributing to the escalating obesity rates in India.
During an interactive session hosted by Assocham on “Obesity and its Negative Health Impacts,” he remarked that “adult obesity is on the rise and highlighted the necessity for education, awareness, and open dialogues to tackle this crisis.”
He also noted the alarming increase in childhood obesity within the country.
Anil Rajput, Chairperson of the Assocham National Council on CSR, acknowledged that obesity is a pressing issue being addressed at multiple levels nationwide.
The government has implemented various initiatives such as FIT India, Eat Right India, Poshan Abhiyan, and Khelo India to promote balanced diets and active living.
“More individuals are becoming health-conscious, and I am confident that through these collective efforts, India will progress toward becoming a more productive nation and move closer to our aspiration of a Viksit Bharat by 2047,” Rajput stated.
In the 119th episode of ‘Mann Ki Baat,’ Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the rising obesity rates and the importance of prevention to avert diseases like hypertension, diabetes, and cancer.
“To transform into a fit and healthy nation, addressing the obesity issue is imperative. A study indicates that one in every eight individuals currently faces obesity challenges,” PM Modi stressed.
Dr. Sudhir Kalhan, Chairman of the Institute of Minimal Access, Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi, pointed out that sedentary lifestyles, poor diets, and genetic factors are causing obesity rates to soar, leading to diabetes, hypertension, and heart ailments.
“As a bariatric surgeon, I observe the severe consequences daily. The urgency for awareness and preventive measures cannot be overstated. Simple actions like maintaining balanced diets, engaging in regular exercise, and seeking timely medical intervention can help mitigate obesity,” he emphasized.
