New Delhi, Sep 25 (NationPress) The recent adjustments to the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on lifesaving medicines are expected to positively impact healthcare, according to consumer feedback received on Thursday.
Earlier this month, the GST Council made a significant move by lowering the GST rate on lifesaving medicines and medical devices from 12 percent to 5 percent.
As a result of this GST adjustment, the majority of medicines that were previously taxed at 12 percent will now be subject to only 5 percent GST.
Furthermore, 36 critical life-saving drugs for conditions such as cancer, genetic disorders, rare diseases, and cardiovascular issues have been completely exempted from GST (0 percent). The GST Council also revised tax categories on health and life insurance premiums, glucometers, and corrective eyewear.
“Prime Minister Narendra Modi has made commendable efforts in this sector,” expressed Subhash Chandra from Haridwar, Uttarakhand, during an interview with IANS.
Chandra mentioned that he managed to purchase medicines for 6.5 percent less than before.
“In the past, medicines were costly, but now they are more affordable. PM Modi has done an excellent job, providing relief to many low-income individuals,” he added.
Ashwani Kumar, a pharmacist based in Haridwar, remarked to IANS that the GST reduction on lifesaving medicines will significantly benefit healthcare.
“Previously, medicines carried a 12 percent GST. Now, lifesaving medicines will incur only a 5 percent GST, enhancing affordability for many,” Kumar detailed.
“Life-saving medications, particularly those for cancer and HIV, are now tax-exempt, granting substantial relief to patients suffering from these serious ailments,” he noted.
“This government initiative is set to make a remarkable difference,” he added, expressing gratitude to PM Modi for the “exceptional work” that could become a pivotal moment in the healthcare sector.
