New Delhi, Aug 8 (NationPress) The Indian Council of Medical Research's (ICMR) nationwide SHINE initiative is set to spark scientific curiosity and promote innovation among students and future explorers, stated Dr. Rajiv Bahl, Director General of ICMR, on Thursday.
The acronym S.H.I.N.E., which signifies Science, Health, and Innovation for Nextgen Explorers, was inaugurated by ICMR along with the Department of Health Research (DHR) in alignment with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for students to “experience a day as a scientist.”
As part of this initiative, 13,150 students from grades 9-12 across over 300 schools in 39 districts spanning 16 states and union territories were introduced to the realm of health and biomedical research at various ICMR institutes.
The two-day event aimed to showcase ICMR’s contributions to enhancing the nation’s health and to encourage young minds to pursue careers in science and public health, thereby supporting India’s vision for a Viksit Bharat by 2047.
“This initiative by ICMR is truly unique in its goal to inspire scientific curiosity, promote innovation, and motivate the upcoming generation of health researchers,” Bahl remarked.
He stressed the significance of scientific temperament, innovation, and youth participation in molding the future of Indian research and healthcare.
“Today is not merely a visit; it’s an invitation to step into a scientist's shoes,” Dr. Bahl expressed.
“We want you to observe, question, and experience firsthand the essence of scientific inquiry. Engage with our scientists, explore laboratories, and witness the advancements India has made in medical and health research. This is how we foster a Viksit Bharat -- through curiosity, evidence, and ambition,” he added.
The program featured a variety of interactive activities, including guided laboratory tours, research exhibitions, poster presentations, video displays, and live demonstrations of ongoing scientific endeavors.
Students also had the chance to interact with ICMR scientists, gaining valuable insights into their research journeys, expertise, and daily work in public health. To enhance the experience, a mascot named Dr. Curio was introduced as a friendly and relatable guide for the students throughout the day.
Furthermore, students viewed four specially curated short films showcasing ICMR’s pivotal initiatives: the development of Covaxin—India’s indigenous vaccine, the iDRONE initiative for innovative healthcare delivery, India’s TB elimination efforts, and Vishanu Yudh Abhyas—a nationwide mock drill to evaluate future pandemic preparedness.
