IIT Bombay Collaborates with Directorate General of Hydrocarbons to Advance R&D in Petroleum Decarbonisation

New Delhi, Nov 29 (NationPress) The Directorate General of Hydrocarbons under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has partnered with the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay to promote research and development in enhanced hydrocarbon recovery and geologic carbon dioxide storage.

The Memorandum of Understanding signed between DGH and IIT Bombay seeks to propel the evolution of new energy and decarbonisation technologies across India. This initiative will be facilitated through collaborative learning, joint research, innovative breakthroughs, and potential deployment.

This partnership follows the establishment of a new department, Hydrocarbon Efficiency and New Energy, which was launched by Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri during the UrjaVarta 2024 event in July.

In the meantime, IIT Bombay has been at the forefront of various initiatives in the petroleum sector, encompassing both upstream and downstream activities, as well as conventional and unconventional methods.

The initiatives are carried out through active collaborations with numerous industries to expedite the development and implementation of new technologies while aiding them in achieving their net-zero goals.

Prof. Vikram Vishal, Convener of the DST-National Centre of Excellence in CCUS within the Department of Earth Sciences at IIT Bombay, delivered a concise presentation outlining the scope of the MoU, which includes site-specific studies on carbon dioxide storage with or without enhanced oil recovery, exploring new geo-energy resources, constructing CCS regulatory frameworks, and demonstrating the principles of CCS.

Dr. Govil also underscored the urgent need for collaboration to address the substantial challenges confronting the upstream hydrocarbon sector, particularly as it evolves in response to energy transitions and net-zero objectives.

"I have great admiration for the vibrant research atmosphere at IIT Bombay, and I firmly believe this marks the start of a remarkable collaborative model that will enhance our efforts in improving energy access, efficiency, sustainability, and security," she remarked.

Dr. Kaustav Nag, Additional Director General (Exploration) at DGH, highlighted the organization's vision of utilizing data and expertise to bolster the geoscientific community, thereby enhancing innovation and growth within the upstream hydrocarbon sector.
