IIT Kanpur Records Unprecedented 152 IPR Filings in 2024

New Delhi, Jan 3 (NationPress) The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IITK) has reached a significant milestone by filing an all-time high of 152 Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) in a single year -- 2024, as announced by the esteemed institution on Friday.

Among the 152 IPR submissions, there are 124 patents, 10 design registrations, 2 copyrights, and 6 trademark applications. The institute has also broadened its international footprint by securing 7 US patents, 2 Chinese patents, and 1 European patent, as stated by the institute.

As of now, IIT Kanpur has successfully accumulated a total of 1,200 Intellectual Property Rights. The institute has also maintained an impressive licensing rate with industry partners, achieving approximately 12.91 percent in 2024.

Some prominent inventions that were awarded patents include a transdermal patch for drug delivery; Kryptoceler for cryptographic acceleration; a chop saw metal-cutting machine; a hybrid-powered electric tower car; and a contactless automated tool for measuring crack growth.

"Achieving 152 IPR filings in 2024 and experiencing a substantial rise in granted patents underscores IIT Kanpur's dedication to leading translational research that connects research with practical applications," remarked Prof. Manindra Agrawal, Director of IIT Kanpur, in a statement.

He expressed appreciation to "researchers, government, other stakeholders, and the institute's IPR Cell for their crucial role in facilitating the transfer of technologies from academia to industry."

Furthermore, in 2024, IIT Kanpur saw a notable increase in the number of IPRs granted -- a total of 217 previously filed IPRs.

In the same year, the institute was honored for the third time with the prestigious STEM Impact Awards 2024 for its influential technology transfer initiatives.

"As we look ahead to 2025, we are committed to enhancing our research and development capabilities across various domains and strengthening industry-academia collaborations to foster innovations that will make a lasting difference in society," Agrawal stated.
