Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Oct 27 (NationPress) Union Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw revealed on Monday the endorsement of the initial batch of seven initiatives valued at over Rs 5,500 crore under the Electronics Components Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS).
According to an official announcement, incentives will be provided for the domestic production of multi-layer printed circuit boards (PCBs), HDI PCBs, camera modules, copper-clad laminates, and polypropylene films.
This initiative signifies a pivotal advancement in India's transition from producing finished goods to the creation of modules, components, materials, and machinery necessary for their manufacture.
The approved projects include five facilities in Tamil Nadu, one in Andhra Pradesh, and another in Madhya Pradesh.
The IT Ministry reported an enthusiastic response to the scheme, receiving 249 applications, indicating proposed investments of Rs 1.15 lakh crore, anticipated production of around Rs 10.34 lakh crore, and the potential creation of 1.42 lakh jobs.
Electro-mechanical components and multi-layer PCBs attracted the highest interest, with 87 and 43 applicants, respectively.
The seven endorsed projects entail a total investment of Rs 5,532 crore, expected to yield components worth Rs 36,559 crore and generate over 5,100 direct jobs.
Industry leaders assert that the government's swift action in approving the first set of seven applications under ECMS showcases its commitment to decisive leadership.
"These investments will spur extensive domestic capabilities, capitalizing on the scale achieved through mobile phone and electronics manufacturing," stated Pankaj Mohindroo, Chairman of ICEA.
The ECMS aims to position India as a resilient and trustworthy entity in global electronics value chains, enhancing local value addition as design capabilities evolve and Indian companies emerge as international competitors.
Initiated in April as part of the India Semiconductor Mission, the ECMS has a financial allocation of Rs 22,919 crore.
