Will India's Passenger Vehicle Sales Continue to Surge?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 20 (NationPress) Passenger vehicle retail sales in India increased by 7% in January compared to the same month last year, with wholesale volumes rising by 12% to reach 4.5 lakh units, according to a report released on Friday.
The analysis from ICRA highlighted that wholesale dispatches saw a growth of 14% sequentially from December 2025, as original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) intensified production to meet the strong domestic demand.
ICRA anticipates that wholesale volumes for passenger vehicles will grow by 5-7% in FY26, supported by ongoing demand trends, GST reductions, and the launch of new models.
“The domestic automobile market demonstrated significant growth in both two-wheeler (2W) and passenger vehicle (PV) sectors in January 2026, buoyed by sustained demand, GST rate cuts, wedding season factors, and fresh model introductions,” stated the report.
The sequential growth of 14% in wholesale volumes during January occurred despite production limitations due to annual maintenance. Retail sales were bolstered by the winter wedding season, new model launches, and adjusted GST rates.
During the first 10 months of FY26, overall wholesale growth for passenger vehicles was recorded at 6.7%, while retail sales increased by 8%.
The domestic automobile sector is projected to continue its steady growth through FY2026, driven by policy initiatives aimed at enhancing domestic manufacturing, improved affordability following GST adjustments, a rebound in consumption, and stable rural incomes post-normal monsoon.
In the meantime, the domestic two-wheeler segment saw wholesale volumes surge by 25% year-on-year, reaching 1.8 million units, with a 6.7% growth in wholesale volumes over the first 10 months of FY2026 (April-January).
Retail sales for two-wheelers rose by 20.8% year-on-year in January, propelled by demand associated with Pongal or Makar Sankranti, wedding season traffic, and enhanced affordability, as noted in the report.
The forecast for two-wheeler domestic volumes is projected to grow by 6-9% year-on-year in FY26, supported by increased replacement demand following GST cuts, gradual recovery in urban consumption, and robust rural incomes.
Electric two-wheeler retail sales reached 1,23,012 units in January, representing a 25.3% year-on-year increase.
