Why Did NASA Postpone Its Spacewalk Due to Medical Concerns?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Jan 8 (NationPress) The US space agency NASA announced on Thursday that it has decided to delay its planned spacewalk due to a medical concern involving one of its astronauts.
Originally, astronauts Mike Fincke and Zena Cardman from Expedition 74 were set to undertake their first spacewalk of 2026, where they intended to leave the airlock of the International Space Station to perform critical power upgrade tasks.
Details regarding the specific medical issue and the identity of the astronaut have not been disclosed by the agency.
“NASA is postponing the spacewalk scheduled for Thursday, January 8, due to a medical concern for a crew member that emerged Wednesday afternoon aboard the station,” the agency noted in a blog update.
“For medical privacy reasons, NASA cannot disclose further details about the crew member involved. The situation is currently stable. Additional information, including a rescheduled date for the spacewalk, will be shared later,” the statement continued.
During the anticipated six-and-a-half-hour spacewalk, Commander Fincke and Engineer Cardman were expected to install a modification kit and route cables for a future solar array rollout.
They also planned to set up jumper cables, take hardware photographs, and gather microorganism samples.
This spacewalk would mark the first for Cardman, a 38-year-old geobiologist who joined the astronaut corps in 2017.
On the preceding Wednesday, Fincke and Cardman organized their spacewalking tools and supplies within the Quest airlock, preparing for their exit from the orbital station. They completed the setup of their spacesuits along with essential life support and safety components, according to NASA.
At the conclusion of their preparation, they were joined by Flight Engineers Chris Williams of NASA and Kimiya Yui of JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) for a final review of spacewalk procedures and a readiness assessment with mission controllers on the ground.
Williams and Yui are tasked with assisting the astronauts in donning and doffing their spacesuits, pressurizing and depressurizing the Quest airlock, and overseeing the spacewalkers during their operations outside the station.
