New Delhi, Dec 11 (NationPress) Engineers at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Rourkela have unveiled an innovative robotic system that aims to interact with individuals in a remarkably human-like fashion.

Utilizing Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Large Language Models (LLMs), this social robot is capable of comprehending everyday language, executing spoken commands, responding to inquiries, and partaking in real-time discussions that go beyond pre-programmed replies.

Additionally, it can identify users’ emotions by analyzing facial expressions, such as happy, neutral, or sad. The robot can greet individuals, offer guidance, and communicate using natural-sounding speech.

This versatile system can be deployed in various environments including homes, classrooms, offices, hospitals, and community areas. It also has the ability to recognize simple gestures like waving and raising a hand, responding appropriately.

“The home-grown robotic system strongly aligns with the Government of India’s Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives. Unlike existing global systems, NIT Rourkela’s social robot presents a uniquely integrated framework that merges gesture, emotion, speech, and LLM-based conversational capabilities within an affordable platform tailored for Indian circumstances,” explained Dr. Anup Nandy, Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at NIT Rourkela.

The institute has also obtained a patent for this groundbreaking innovation and system.

The robot operates on a Raspberry Pi system to process user inputs, including spoken commands or text queries. The LLM evaluates the input, establishes the context, and generates a fitting, human-like response. This response is then articulated through the robot’s speech system using Google Text-to-Speech.

Equipped with a wheel-based platform and navigation system for seamless movement, the robot also includes a built-in distance-sensing module to avoid obstacles and ensure safe navigation in busy settings.

Described in a paper published in the Computers and Electrical Engineering journal, the robot is projected to cost between Rs 80,000 and Rs 90,000 depending on manufacturing scale and component optimization, according to the researchers.
