New Delhi, Dec 4 (NationPress) More than 157 lakh passengers have reaped the benefits of 3.27 lakh Regional Connectivity Scheme-UDAN flights, which connect various destinations across the nation, including tier 2 cities, as reported in Parliament on Thursday.
In the period of 2024-25, two airports, namely Amravati and Solapur, have been developed and made operational in Maharashtra.
Moreover, from January 2024 to November 2025, 34 RCS routes have been launched in Maharashtra, connecting multiple airports across the country, including those in tribal and underdeveloped districts, as stated by Murlidhar Mohol, Minister of State for Civil Aviation, in a written response to a query in the Lok Sabha.
The minister noted that Viability Gap Funding (VGF) and various concessions are provided to encourage airline operators to join and ensure affordability.
“To date, a total of Rs 4,352 crore has been allocated to aid selected airline operators through Viability Gap Funding (VGF) under the scheme,” the minister disclosed.
The government oversees the utilization and performance of UDAN routes through metrics such as load factor, on-time performance, aircraft deployment, and service sustainability, which are regularly reviewed through a structured monitoring system.
Airports situated in tribal or remote districts, including the operational UDAN airports in Maharashtra, are continuously evaluated, and routes meeting the established performance standards continue to receive support for sustained and reliable regional air connectivity in underserved areas, Mohol stated.
Today, UDAN is celebrated as one of India’s significant achievements, subtly interweaving prosperity into the nation's social and economic landscape. The country's civil aviation sector has expanded more rapidly than most global markets, placing India among the top three domestic aviation markets worldwide.
Under the UDAN initiative, 649 routes have been launched, connecting 93 unserved and underserved airports, which include 15 heliports and 2 water aerodromes.
