New Delhi, Nov 3 (NationPress) To strengthen oversight on Tatkal ticketing and guarantee fair opportunities for authentic travelers, the Railway Ministry has initiated a one-time password (OTP) verification mechanism for those acquiring Tatkal tickets at in-person reservation counters.
As per reports, this system, which was launched on a trial basis on November 17, initially pertained to a limited number of trains but has now been broadened to include 52 trains. Plans are in place to extend this system to all other trains shortly as part of a phased implementation, as indicated by government sources.
With the new protocol, individuals purchasing a Tatkal ticket at a counter will receive an OTP on the mobile number provided in the reservation form.
The ministry clarified that tickets will only be issued once the passenger successfully verifies the OTP, adding an additional layer of safety and preventing abuse during the high-demand Tatkal period.
This initiative is designed to mitigate the malpractices commonly associated with touts and agents who typically capitalize on the limited Tatkal quota.
Officials noted that this measure should guarantee that last-minute tickets are allocated to genuine travelers rather than intermediaries, as every counter transaction will be connected to a mobile OTP.
This recent action is part of a larger renovation of the ticketing system that has been undertaken this year. In July, the Railways implemented Aadhaar-based OTP verification for online Tatkal bookings to combat automated or fraudulent activities.
Furthermore, starting October 1, only users authenticated through Aadhaar were permitted to book reserved general tickets during the initial 15 minutes of the booking window on the IRCTC website or mobile app.
