South Korea and India Collaborate to Boost Space Industry Opportunities
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bengaluru, April 20 (NationPress) The space agencies of South Korea and India convened a collaborative industry event on Monday aimed at enhancing cooperation and exploring business prospects related to space initiatives, as reported by Seoul's space authority.
The Korea Aerospace Administration (KASA) co-organized the Korea-India Space Day with IN-SPACe, which is India's regulatory and promotion body for the space industry, in Bengaluru.
This gathering was a follow-up to a memorandum of understanding signed last year between KASA and the Indian Space Research Organization, coinciding with South Korean President Lee Jae Myung's visit to India for discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as stated by Yonhap news agency.
During the event, nine South Korean companies, including Korea Aerospace Industries Ltd. and Innospace, showcased their core competencies through keynote speeches, alongside presentations from nine Indian firms.
Oh Tae-seog, head of KASA, remarked, "India, having successfully completed the world's first landing near the moon's south pole, is a vital ally for us," and emphasized the intent to bolster collaboration to forge a preeminent partnership in the global space economy.
On another note, the number of space startups in India has surpassed 400, with investments exceeding $500 million.
The initiative to establish an Earth Observation (EO) satellite constellation using a public-private partnership model is set to drive innovation and enhance global confidence in Indian space technology enterprises. Currently, 25 companies are testing their satellites and subsystems in the actual space environment utilizing platforms like 'POEM'.
State governments are recognizing space as a promising sector and are implementing proactive policies to incentivize companies through various schemes. Furthermore, Indian space firms are gradually integrating into global aerospace and space supply chains.
Notable space startups that have emerged in the country since 2014 include Pixxel, Dhruva, Skyroot Aerospace, Agnikul Cosmos, and Bellatrix Aerospace, among others.
The 'Startup India' initiative, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 16, 2016, aims to foster innovation, stimulate entrepreneurship, and enable investment-led growth, with the goal of transforming India into a nation of job creators rather than job seekers.
