New Delhi, March 16 (NationPress) A group of scientists has introduced a groundbreaking virtual reality (VR) treatment aimed at addressing speech anxiety, a condition that is increasingly prevalent worldwide.
Published in the journal Frontiers, the study details the efforts of Dr. Chris Macdonald from the University of Cambridge in the UK, who developed an online platform enabling users to evolve into adept and assured public speakers. This platform features customized course materials that foster essential skills, while immersive virtual reality training scenarios enhance self-assurance.
“In the real world, a user might rehearse a presentation in solitude within their bedroom, but on the new virtual reality platform, they can feel the thrill of presenting to a diverse range of progressively challenging photorealistic audiences,” Dr. Macdonald explained.
By creating a technique to convert smartphones into VR headsets, Dr. Macdonald has ensured that this platform is available to everyone.
The platform has been clinically validated to significantly boost confidence levels for most users following just one 30-minute session.
In a recent trial with students from Cambridge and University College London (UCL), it was discovered that a week of self-directed usage proved beneficial for all participants.
The platform assisted users in various ways, including: feeling more prepared, adaptable, resilient, confident, better managing nerves, and experiencing reduced anxiety.
A user-centered iterative process confirmed that the platform was effective 'in the wild.'
Throughout its development, the platform has facilitated over 50,000 practice presentations from remote beta testers. To rigorously test the software and hardware, in-person events were conducted, one of which involved over 1,000 individuals engaging with the platform under less-than-ideal circumstances in a demo room in Cambridge.
To broaden and deepen the participant pool, the lab organized a tour, making stops at major science and technology events like New Scientist Live, as well as more casual locations such as local markets, libraries, community centers, churches, and even private residences.
Speech anxiety and the fear of public speaking affect a significant number of individuals and are becoming increasingly widespread.
The platform holds tremendous potential to empower individuals to conquer their fear of public speaking, ultimately improving their quality of life and enabling them to become catalysts for positive change in the world,” the authors stated.
