Over 1,800 athletes from across India have assembled at Rashtriya Raksha University in Gandhinagar for the 4th National Armwrestling & Para Armwrestling Championship, one of the largest armwrestling competitions ever held in the country. The four-day event, which runs from 30 May to 1 June, is being organised by the Armwrestling Sports Association Gujarat under the aegis of the People's Armwrestling Federation India (PAFI).

Scale and Structure of the Championship

The championship spans competitions across male and female sub-junior, junior, youth, senior, para, and master categories, spread over multiple weight divisions. All participating athletes are being accommodated on the university campus for the duration of the event. The organisational effort is being led by Association President Rajendrasinh Parmar and Treasurer Mayank Patel.

World Championship Qualification at Stake

The tournament carries significant competitive weight: athletes finishing in the top two positions in each category will earn direct qualification for the World Armwrestling & Para Armwrestling Championship, scheduled to be held in New Delhi from 29 October to 7 November 2026. India hosting the World Championship adds a rare home-advantage dimension to the national selection process this year.

Pro Panja League Stars Battle for National Honours

The championship is also serving as a high-profile reunion of leading Pro Panja League athletes, who are now competing for their respective states. The 90 kg senior men's category has emerged as the most anticipated contest, featuring prominent names including Denic Lalruattluanaga, Tawheed Shaikh, Dara Singh Handa, Asker Ali, Pranjit Saikia, Satnam Singh, and Pramod Mukhi — all vying for medals and a berth at the World Championships.

What PAFI President Said

Preeti Jhangiani, President of PAFI and Vice President of the Asian Armwrestling Federation (AAF), highlighted the sport's rapid growth at the national level. 'The growth of arm wrestling in India is evident from the scale of this championship. Having more than 1,800 athletes under one roof is a testament to the passion, dedication and rapid development of the sport across the country,' she said. Jhangiani added that top performers would earn the opportunity to compete at the upcoming World Championships in New Delhi.

This edition of the national championship arrives at a pivotal moment for the sport in India. With the country set to host the World Championship later in 2026, domestic competition infrastructure and athlete depth are under the global spotlight.
