Rajkot, Jan 15 (NationPress) New Zealand cricketer Daryl Mitchell expressed his excitement about representing his nation and playing a key role in the team’s seven-wicket victory against India in the second ODI at Niranjan Shah Stadium in Rajkot. He emphasized that the opportunity to engage in international cricket is always exciting.

Named Player of the Match, Mitchell scored an impressive unbeaten 131 runs off 117 balls, helping New Zealand level the series with a significant win over India. He formed a remarkable 162-run partnership off 152 balls with Will Young, who contributed 87 runs.

“It feels great to secure the win here after a couple of years. It’s important for our younger squad to see that we can contend with the best teams globally. I genuinely enjoy representing New Zealand, and it’s always fantastic to get the opportunity,” Mitchell remarked during the post-match presentation.

Mitchell praised Young, stating, “Youngy is an exceptional player, and I thoroughly enjoy batting alongside him. It was a lot of fun out there. We certainly enjoyed the competition while having a good time.”

Having previously scored centuries against India without winning, Mitchell ensured his performance led New Zealand to victory this time, finishing the match with 15 balls to spare. His ability to tackle Kuldeep Yadav effectively was vital in the team’s success.

“I consider him one of the best bowlers globally. He can spin the ball in both directions and possesses outstanding skills. Our focus was on reading the game and adapting accordingly,” he added.

Young emphasized that their partnership was built on effective communication and timing. “It was highly rewarding, and sharing that partnership with Daryl was enjoyable. We motivated each other, creating a platform to finalize the chase,” he explained.

Addressing the challenge posed by India’s spinners, Young noted, “India has exceptional spinners like Jadeja. The initial challenge was against him, but Daryl and I found our rhythm, recognizing an opportunity to score against Kuldeep, which paid off.”

Reflecting on the broader significance of their win, Young remarked, “We didn’t realize we were chasing a record score. After scoring 300 in the first match, we thought 285 was a reasonable target, allowing us to apply pressure at different moments during the game.”

“Partnerships go through various phases. Sometimes it’s tough to score, while other times it’s easier. Honesty with your partner is key. Clear communication helps in bouncing ideas off each other, leading to a mutual understanding, which Daryl and I achieved,” he stated.

The deciding match of the series is set to take place in Indore on Sunday, and Young expressed his enjoyment of playing international matches in India. “To be honest, the Black Caps have never won a one-day series here. We came close in the first game, so the motivation to secure a win for New Zealand is strong,” he concluded.

“If I can contribute runs, that’s fantastic, but the partnership with Daryl was truly enjoyable, and being in India with packed crowds is exhilarating. It’s the home of cricket in many ways, and being part of it is incredibly exciting,” he shared.
