Pasindu Sooriyabandara and Kamindu Mendis staged a defiant fightback for Sri Lanka in the second innings of the 2nd Test against India at the Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC), Colombo on 26 August, frustrating the visitors after the follow-on was enforced on Day 4. By tea, Sri Lanka had advanced to 199 for 3 in 56 overs, slashing the deficit to just 16 runs, with Sooriyabandara unbeaten on 90 and Dhananjaya de Silva at 14.

The second session began with Sri Lanka placed at 83 for 2, still 131 runs adrift of India's first-innings total of 503 for 9 declared. The early loss of Kamil Mishara had handed India a brief upper hand, but Sooriyabandara and Mendis refused to buckle. Mendis Fifty and a Historic Partnership

Sooriyabandara's Twin-Fifty Milestone

Sooriyabandara brought up his own fifty in the 31st over, advancing down the track to lift Ravindra Jadeja over extra cover for a boundary. The knock was his second fifty of the match, making him the first Sri Lankan batter since Danushka Gunathilaka against South Africa in 2018 to score twin fifties in a Test at the SSC. He reached 90 off 157 balls by the tea interval, looking increasingly assured as the session wore on.

India's Search for Breakthroughs

India eventually prised out Mendis in the 44th over when Prasidh Krishna went short and the left-hander skied a pull towards square leg, where Shubman Gill took an excellent running catch. Despite the wicket, no collapse followed — Dhananjaya de Silva joined Sooriyabandara and the pair safely negotiated the remainder of the session. India rotated pace and spin, bringing back Mohammed Siraj with Rishabh Pant standing up to the stumps, and persisting with young spinners Manav Suthar and Saransh Jain, though neither could match the control Jadeja had earlier demonstrated.
