Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chennai, Feb 27 (NationPress) In a stellar performance during the second match of the T20 World Cup 2026 Super 8s against Zimbabwe, Indian batsmen Abhishek Sharma and Tilak Varma have been honored as the Impact Players of the Match, leading the team to a commanding 72-run victory at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Thursday.
After a rocky start to the tournament, Abhishek made a significant comeback, scoring his inaugural half-century with an impressive 55 runs off just 30 balls. Meanwhile, Tilak, who had been facing his own struggles, turned things around with a rapid 44 runs off merely 16 balls.
Team India's doctor, Rizwan Khan, announced the two players as the awardees, elaborating on the decision to recognize both for their outstanding contributions in the match.
"It was a pivotal day, and the energy started when Hardik motivated the team during the huddle. His passionate address inspired everyone to perform exceptionally, and we were fortunate to have not one but two impact players today," he stated in a video shared by BCCI.
"Our first impact player faced initial challenges with a gut issue, yet he displayed remarkable courage today. Our second impact player also had difficulties leading up to the tournament, but his innings today can only be described as an all-out attack, marking the decisive blow of the match," he added.
Upon receiving the Impact Player of the Match medal, Abhishek expressed gratitude towards the coaching staff and captain for their unwavering trust in him.
"Although I spent considerable time with the doctor in the early days, finally being able to contribute to the team's success is incredibly special. I felt that the team had more faith in me than I did during my tough times. This support was pivotal, and it motivated me to believe I would excel in a match, and today it came to fruition," Abhishek remarked.
Tilak echoed similar sentiments, stating, "I too faced significant challenges before the tournament. The support from the doctor and team was invaluable. I was really struggling, but their backing made all the difference. I just needed one good innings, and it arrived at the perfect moment, making me very happy."
Looking ahead, India is set to face the West Indies in a crucial match at the Eden Gardens Stadium in Kolkata on Sunday.
