New Delhi, July 21 (NationPress) Former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has expressed his belief in captain Shubman Gill's ability to rebound from a 1-2 deficit in the forthcoming fourth Test at Old Trafford in Manchester.
Gill's debut as captain has been relatively stable during this tour. While the scoreline may indicate England's superiority, the Indian team has showcased a commendable attacking spirit, exemplified by their narrow 22-run defeat at Lord's.
With the fourth Test being a crucial opportunity for the visiting team to recover, Manjrekar believes that this break will provide Gill with the chance to reflect on his leadership style and come out with renewed vigor in Manchester.
“Gill is a young captain who has already exceeded expectations, both with his performance as a batsman and as a leader. Although the series score may be tight, India has secured a Test victory, which speaks volumes about his approach. This eight-day interval is perfectly timed for him.
“He has a solid support system, and his father, more than anyone else, understands Shubman's true nature, whether he’s a potential Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni, or a combination of both,” Manjrekar shared on JioHotstar.
“I suspect he’s somewhere in between. He must carve out his own identity now—one that elevates both his leadership and batting. If anything hinders either aspect, he needs to swiftly move on from it.
“In the first Test, he relied heavily on Rishabh Pant and others. By the second Test, he began to assert his authority, which yielded positive results. After this minor setback in the third Test, we may witness Shubman Gill's finest captaincy yet in Manchester. Hopefully, we’ll also witness the best of Shubman Gill as a batsman,” he added.
The Indian camp is currently facing challenges with injuries to Arshdeep Singh, Akash Deep, and Nitish Kumar Reddy, alongside Rishabh Pant, who is recuperating from a finger injury sustained during the Lord's Test.
Additionally, concerns regarding workload management have limited Jasprit Bumrah's participation to just three out of the five Tests in this series. He played in the first and third Tests, and with an eight-day gap before the fourth Test, India seems to be “leaning towards” including him at Old Trafford.
