Can Akshay Sharma Maintain His Lead at the Chhattisgarh Open?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Naya Raipur, Feb 3 (NationPress) Akshay Sharma struck an impressive nine-under 60, leading the first round of the INR 1.5 crore Chhattisgarh Open 2026, marking the season opener for the PGTI.
Sharma's performance tied the record for the lowest round ever recorded at the Fairway Golf & Lake Resort in Naya Raipur, a feat previously accomplished by Khalin Joshi last year.
The two-time PGTI champion from Chandigarh delivered a flawless round, scoring five birdies on the front nine and four on the back nine, while narrowly missing two hole-in-ones.
Sharma expressed, “It was a dream round; everything clicked perfectly today—my driving, iron play, and putting. I only missed three greens in regulation and was just a foot away from two holes-in-one on the second and 17th. I built good momentum towards the end of last year with some top-10 finishes, and I feel I'm continuing that trend here. I also had a strong finish last year in Naya Raipur.”
In a notable performance, 16-year-old Kartik Singh, who recently finished tied for seventh at the PGTI Qualifying School, made his DP World PGTI debut and secured a tie for second place with an eagle, seven birdies, and one bogey.
Singh remarked, “I’m thrilled to start so well in my first event at the PGTI. After a bogey on the first hole, I regained my composure. My goal is to play my best every day. I sank several long putts today and chipped in once. The competition here on the DP World PGTI is intense, and I know I need to elevate my game to keep up.”
Earlier today, the Honourable Finance Minister of Chhattisgarh, Shri O P Choudhary, officiated the ceremonial tee-off at 8:30 am, followed by a meet-and-greet with professional golfers and media representatives.
Choudhary stated, “Events like the SECL Chhattisgarh Open significantly enhance the image of Chhattisgarh and help shift perceptions. We are committed to developing Naya Raipur Greenfield Capital City while also fostering sports in the state. New sporting facilities and academies will soon emerge in Chhattisgarh, boosting employment opportunities, inspiring young athletes, and showcasing our state as a major sporting hub and tourist destination, which will attract investments and drive economic growth.”
“We eagerly anticipate the presence of our national sporting icon, Shri Kapil Dev, President of PGTI, on the tournament's final day. His continued support is vital for elevating this event and promoting sports in Chhattisgarh.”
