Naya Raipur, Feb 4 (NationPress) Akshay Sharma showcased his exceptional skills at the INR 1.5 crore Chhattisgarh Open 2026 by delivering another impressive bogey-free performance, achieving a remarkable nine-under 60.

His stellar second round propelled him into a commanding three-shot lead with a total of 18-under 120 at the season-opening event organized by PGTI at the breathtaking Fairway Golf & Lake Resort in Naya Raipur.

Honey Baisoya and Anshul Kabthiyal, who were tied for fourth overnight, both recorded scores of eight-under 61 on Wednesday, moving them into a tie for second place at 15-under 123.

Veer Ahlawat, one of the tournament's prominent contenders, stood tied for ninth at 11-under 127, with the halfway cut established at six-under 132, allowing 51 professionals to proceed.

Sharma (60-60), who led by one shot overnight, matched the record for the lowest score in a single round at the Fairway Golf & Lake Resort, further solidifying his position on day two.

The 35-year-old from Chandigarh, a holder of three professional titles, maintained an error-free round for the second consecutive day.

In pursuit of ending a five-year victory drought, Sharma notched five birdies on the back-nine, including two impressive 18-foot conversions, and narrowly missed a hole-in-one on the 17th, where his tee shot landed just inches from the hole—marking the third time he has come close to a hole-in-one in this tournament.

On the front-nine, he made two birdies and an eagle, landing his iron shots within five feet on all occasions. He came close to an albatross on the eighth hole, leaving a mere one-foot putt for eagle.

Sharma expressed, “I’ve been playing so well that it feels like a dream. I’ve been striking the ball beautifully. Before my round today, I checked out the defending champion Shaurya Bhattacharya’s scores and stats from last year. Shaurya concluded the week with 27-under and had only one bogey. This motivated me to set my targets for the week. I aim to surpass Shaurya’s total and maintain a bogey-free performance.

“This success stems from my consistent practice during the New Year break. My course management has been exceptional this week. After switching my clubs, my game has improved significantly. The focus will now be on hitting most fairways and greens.”
