Hyderabad, April 15 (NationPress) Shubhankar Sharma registered his second straight six-under 66, securing a two-shot advantage after the second round of the inaugural Rs 1 crore Boulders Classic at the Boulder Hills Golf & Country Club in Hyderabad.
The 29-year-old Shubhankar (66-66), celebrated for his six wins on the DP World PGTI, is participating in his first tour event since the Tour Championship held in Jamshedpur in December 2021. He ascended to the top of the leaderboard at 12-under 132, showcasing a consistent and composed performance over the initial two rounds.
Thirty-six-year-old Divyanshu Bajaj (69-65) from Kolkata delivered an impeccable seven-under 65, moving from a tied 14th position to claim second place at 10-under 134.
Overnight leader Vishesh Sharma (65-70) from Hyderabad dropped to third with a score of nine-under 135 following a round of two-under 70.
Honey Baisoya, a recent winner on the DP World PGTI, shattered the course record with a stunning eight-under 64, surging 38 positions from tied 42nd to tied fourth with a total of eight-under 136. His remarkable second round featured an eagle, eight birdies, and two bogeys, surpassing the previous course record of 65 set by Vishesh Sharma in the opening round.
Ajeetesh Sandhu (68) and Anshul Kabthiyal (67) shared fourth place alongside Baisoya.
Shubhankar Sharma recorded seven birdies against a single bogey, finishing powerfully with two consecutive birdies to build on his first-round success.
Reflecting on his impressive performance, Shubhankar remarked, “I’ve ended both days well with a few birdies, which is encouraging as we head into tomorrow. I played quite solid today and maintained my patience throughout. I created numerous chances and managed to convert a few early, which helped me settle into the round.”
He continued, “The front nine has been favorable for me these last two days. Even starting on the 10th today, I felt like I didn’t make many mistakes and kept things steady. Staying calm out here and seizing chances when they arise is crucial.”
Discussing the course, Sharma said, “There are several excellent holes here. The 12th requires a crucial tee shot—you must find the fairway as there’s danger on both sides. Precision is essential, especially given the current setup; keeping the ball in play is vital.”
Divyanshu Bajaj, a regular on the DP World PGTI since 2010, achieved a flawless round featuring an eagle on the par-5 14th and five birdies.
The highlight came on the 14th, where Bajaj executed a precise second shot from approximately 190 yards to within 20 feet, successfully converting the putt for eagle.
“I was pleased with the round. Maintaining a clean scorecard was crucial for me, and I succeeded in keeping the ball in play,” Bajaj stated. “It’s a challenging course with penalty areas flanking both sides, so accurate tee shots are essential for building momentum.”
Local favorite and teenager Vishesh Sharma continued to impress in his hometown, achieving his second consecutive eagle on the par-5 14th.
Despite facing challenges, Sharma had a standout moment on the 14th, shaping his approach around a tree from the fairway to approximately 12 feet before successfully making the putt.
“I experienced a bit of a rough day up to that point, but the eagle on the 14th revitalized my round,” Sharma remarked. “I remained patient and focused on my game.”
Yuvraj Sandhu, one of the pre-tournament favorites, followed his opening round of 73 with a four-under 68, placing him tied 27th at three-under 141.
The cut was established at even-par 144, with 53 out of 131 players advancing to the final two rounds.
