Chennai, Sep 16 (NationPress) Chandigarh’s Akshay Sharma claimed the spotlight on the first day of the Chennai Open 2025, recording an impressive nine-under 63 at the prestigious INR 1 crore tournament held at the Cosmo TNGF Golf Course in Chennai on Tuesday.
The 35-year-old golfer, a two-time champion on the Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI), secured a three-stroke lead as the clubhouse leader on Day One, showcasing a remarkable performance that included an eagle on the final hole and seven birdies.
Arjun Prasad from Delhi, who is currently second in the PGTI Order of Merit, was tied for second place at six-under 66 alongside Manu Gandas from Gurugram.
Due to rain, the start of play was delayed by one hour, with the rounds beginning at 8:00 am local time. Unfortunately, fading light halted play at 6:10 pm, leaving 24 out of 126 players still to finish their first round, which will continue at 7:00 am Wednesday.
Akshay Sharma started strongly, sinking birdies on the first four holes by effectively using his irons and wedges to land within five feet on three occasions.
His short game continued to shine, adding three more birdies through the 14th hole. Notably, he made a 36-footer on the ninth and executed a nearly perfect approach on the 14th. He concluded his round dramatically with a 42-foot eagle on the 18th.
“I hit a lot of good shots and putts today, and the fantastic start gave me momentum early on. Adapting to the wet conditions was crucial after last night's rain. My focus was on keeping the ball in play and avoiding the rough,” Akshay commented.
“It was one of those rounds where everything clicked perfectly, with only one bad shot. Although I haven't had a stellar season, finishing in the top-10 in my last event has boosted my confidence,” he added.
Manu Gandas also birdied the first four holes, followed by three birdies and a bogey on the back nine. Arjun Prasad mixed seven birdies with a bogey to finish tied for second with Gandas.
