Is Alec Stewart Returning as Surrey’s Director of Cricket?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
London, Dec 8 (NationPress) Former England captain Alec Stewart is set to take on his full-time duties as Surrey’s director of cricket starting immediately. He had previously stepped down from this role last year to provide care for his wife, Lynn, who sadly passed away in April following a prolonged battle with cancer.
At 62 years old, Stewart had remained involved with Surrey in a high-performance advisory capacity, albeit with a lighter workload to prioritize his wife’s needs.
“Surrey has always been my home, and I'm ready to fully return to my responsibilities with the Club,” Stewart remarked in a statement released on Monday. “My focus has always been on assisting the cricket management team and the squad in becoming the top county in the country, developing cricketers through our pathway system, and helping them achieve their dreams of representing their nation.”
Stewart originally took on the role of Surrey’s Director of Men’s Cricket in 2013, guiding the team through a successful era that saw them claim four County Championship titles. During his tenure, four Surrey players have made it to the England team and are currently competing in the ongoing Ashes series in Australia.
“Alec is a true legend of Surrey, and we are thrilled to welcome him back as Director of Men’s Cricket. His record speaks volumes, and he has been instrumental in much of the Club's success over the years,” stated Oli Slipper, Chair at Surrey.
Stewart played 133 Tests and 170 ODIs for England between 1990 and 2003, contributing to the team that reached the Men’s ODI World Cup final in 1992. “Alec’s dedication, determination, and meticulous approach have shaped the team into what it is today, and we are confident he will continue to elevate the team’s performance as he resumes his leadership role in the county's men's cricket,” added Steve Elworthy, CEO at Surrey.
