New Delhi, May 19 (NationPress) Bournemouth's head coach Andoni Iraola has announced that their talented midfielder Alex Scott will be absent from the upcoming Premier League match against Manchester City on Wednesday (IST), following a surgical procedure for a fractured jaw he suffered during a recent game against Aston Villa.
The 21-year-old was forced to exit the match at Villa Park after a significant collision with Tyrone Mings just seven minutes after kickoff. Despite his efforts to continue playing, the pain was too intense, leading to scans that confirmed the severity of the injury and the need for surgery.
In a pre-match briefing before Bournemouth’s challenging visit to the Etihad Stadium, Iraola shared a positive update regarding Scott’s recovery. Although he has been ruled out of the midweek match, the coach indicated that Scott is already in the process of being fitted for a protective mask, with hopes of making a return before the season concludes.
“With Alex, we really don’t know,” Iraola remarked. “He has visited a facility where they design a mask tailored for him, allowing him to take calculated risks. His comfort level with the mask will be crucial. The surgery was successful, and he is recovering well.”
While the upcoming match against Pep Guardiola’s side is too soon for Scott, Iraola did not entirely dismiss the possibility of his return before the season wraps up, even though this weekend’s match may also be premature. “I think it’s nearly impossible for him to play on Sunday, but I don’t want to rule him out,” he stated.
“He is eager to try the mask, but I believe it will be quite challenging. His bravery is commendable, which is a positive sign as it reflects his optimistic attitude, and we will have to wait and see.”
Scott, who is regarded as one of England's most exciting young midfield talents and a potential candidate for the Under-21s at the forthcoming European Championship, is reportedly keen to return to the field quickly. Nonetheless, the club is exercising caution regarding his recovery.
“He hasn’t participated in training, but he remains in good spirits and is optimistic,” Iraola added, commending the player's resolve and tenacity.
In addition to Scott, Bournemouth will also miss Luis Sinisterra, Enes Unal, Ryan Christie, and Dango Ouattara for their journey to the Etihad. A victory for the Cherries would elevate them back to eighth place in the Premier League standings.
