New Delhi, Aug 18 (NationPress) Real Madrid was seeking a postponement for their La Liga season opener due to inadequate recovery time after their extended season, which included participation in the FIFA Club World Cup. New head coach Xabi Alonso stated that while additional rest would have been beneficial, his squad is prepared to face the challenge.
The club aimed to delay their match against Osasuna at the Santiago Bernabeu on August 20 (IST), emphasizing the lack of recovery and preparation time following their Club World Cup involvement.
"Although the decision is now final, our appeal, particularly regarding the players' health, would have appreciated some backing. However, we’ve only had a short two weeks, and there are no excuses. The team is ready to compete tomorrow. The heart and desire sometimes surpass physical strength," Alonso mentioned in his pre-game press conference.
This season opener marks Alonso's first competitive match since his return to the club after an 11-year hiatus. The Spanish midfielder is already a Real Madrid icon, having played 236 official matches for the club from 2009 to 2014, during which he claimed one UEFA Champions League, one European Super Cup, one La Liga title, two Copa del Rey titles, and one Spanish Super Cup.
"We are all looking forward to it with enthusiasm and eagerness to kick off the season. These two weeks have been brief yet intense, and we are excited about stepping onto the Bernabéu pitch. It’s crucial to start on the right foot. Tomorrow is the moment," Alonso added.
When asked about his feelings upon returning to the team, Alonso responded, "I have cherished memories. Upon returning to Bayern, I felt the warmth. My role now has evolved, but I am thrilled and driven, eager to reconnect with our supporters. Whatever happens, I’m content."
