New Delhi, March 26 (NationPress) Amit Rohidas, a prominent figure in the Indian men’s hockey team, has expressed his feelings after receiving the Pargat Singh Award for Defender of the Year 2024 during the recent Hockey India 7th Annual Awards. He conveyed his surprise and gratitude, reflecting on the collective effort and dedication that led to this success.

When discussing his nomination, Rohidas remarked, “Alongside me, there were three other nominees - Sanjay, Harmanpreet Singh, and Udita, all of whom are exceptional talents. I couldn’t foretell the winner as everyone has been performing remarkably and aiding their teams. I was simply thrilled to be nominated. Winning was an unexpected joy; it was an extraordinary experience.”

Regarded as one of the finest first-rushers globally, Rohidas noted that he hadn’t conversed about his nomination with his teammates, yet he appreciated the enthusiasm and encouragement from friends and supporters.

“People from my circle, particularly those who do not play hockey, were reaching out to me, predicting I would win. However, I believed that the outcome was in God’s hands. I had no expectations due to the stiff competition, but I’m thankful for the acknowledgment,” he stated.

The honor of the Pargat Singh Award has invigorated Rohidas with renewed motivation. “This accolade drives me to strive harder. My teammates and coaching staff have been incredibly supportive, and I owe this achievement to them. It’s a collective effort, and I’m grateful to everyone, including my family, for their steadfast support. This recognition fuels my desire to contribute more to the team and the country,” he expressed.

Talking about his family’s reaction, the 31-year-old shared, “My family watched the awards on YouTube, and they were overjoyed when I won. When I spoke to them, they encouraged me by saying, ‘Continue playing for the nation, and more awards will come your way.’ Their joy inspires me to keep moving forward.”

Looking towards the future, Amit Rohidas is concentrating on upcoming competitions, particularly the Asia Cup and the FIH Pro League, as both events are crucial for direct qualification to the 2026 World Cup.

“I prefer to take it step by step. Currently, my focus is on the Pro League in June and the Asia Cup later this year. Both tournaments are vital for us to secure a spot in the 2026 World Cup. I’m committed to giving my best,” Rohidas asserted.

One of the highlights of Rohidas’ career occurred during the 2024 Paris Olympics, where India clinched back-to-back Olympic Bronze medals and accomplished a historic victory against Australia.

“The 2024 Paris Olympics were significant. We triumphed over Australia after 52 years, marking a monumental moment for our squad. That victory instilled great confidence in us, and winning the bronze medal made it even more unforgettable. It’s a moment I will forever treasure,” Rohidas concluded.
