Stavanger (Norway), Jan 22 (NationPress) The reigning champion, Anna Muzychuk, is poised to make her return to defend her title at the Norway Chess Women's tournament, aiming for a consecutive victory. Since its inception in 2024, Muzychuk has been a prominent contender in both editions, solidifying her reputation in this elite competition.

Muzychuk, a three-time world champion in rapid chess, clinched the Women’s World Rapid Championship in 2016 and has twice earned the Women’s World Blitz Championship in 2014 and 2016. She is also a finalist in the Women’s World Championship and one of just six female players in chess history to achieve a rating surpassing 2600.

In her victory speech from 2025, Muzychuk underscored the importance of the Norway Chess Women tournament for female players, advocating strongly for its continuation, terming it “truly vital” for the advancement of women’s chess.

Muzychuk quickly made her mark at Norway Chess, finishing as runner-up in the inaugural Norway Chess Women's event in 2024 before claiming victory in 2025, thus reinforcing her leading position. Her consistent participation and remarkable performances have established her as a formidable competitor in the tournament.

Launched in 2024, the Norway Chess Women represents the world’s first fully inclusive super tournament for female chess players. It runs concurrently with Norway Chess, adopting the same format, player count, conditions, and prize fund as the main event. This initiative marks a significant leap towards gender equality in competitive chess and has become a staple on the international calendar.
