Itanagar, Nov 20 (NationPress) On Thursday, the Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, Pema Khandu, officially launched the Yonex-Sunrise 48th Inter-State, Inter-Zonal and Junior National Badminton Championship. This remarkable event sees participation from 32 states and Union Territories, featuring 428 top young badminton players from all over the country.

The prestigious week-long championship, hosted under the auspices of the Badminton Association of India (BAI) and organized by the Arunachal State Badminton Association (ASBA), is set to be a highlight in the national sports calendar.

A significant aspect of this championship is the attendance of the Indian Junior Badminton Team, which recently achieved a historic Bronze Medal at the Junior World Badminton Championships 2025 held in Guwahati, Assam.

In his inaugural speech, Khandu described the event as a “historic moment” for Arunachal Pradesh, emphasizing the state's dedication to fostering sports and developing young talent.

The Chief Minister remarked that this tournament is crucial in determining India’s top teams across various categories such as doubles, mixed doubles, and individual events.

He also celebrated India's achievements in badminton, highlighting the legacy of players like Saina Nehwal and P.V. Sindhu, alongside the promising performances of Lakshya Sen and other upcoming talents, stating that badminton has emerged as one of India’s strongest Olympic sports.

Recognizing the Northeast's impact on Indian badminton, Khandu remembered the accomplishments of former Olympian and national champion Deepankar Bhattacharya from Assam, who represented India during the 1992 Barcelona and 1996 Atlanta Olympics.

He also acknowledged BAI President and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for his role in enhancing India's international standing in the sport.

Stressing the state's “silent but powerful sports revolution,” Khandu spoke about the ongoing development of sports infrastructure in Arunachal Pradesh.

He announced that the cutting-edge DK Badminton Academy, built on a 20,700 sq. m campus with 15-20 world-class courts, is set to open soon.

Khandu urged the Badminton Association of India to consider awarding more national and international tournaments to Arunachal Pradesh once the facility is operational, asserting that the enthusiasm of the youth and the rapidly developing infrastructure will position the state as a “nursery of future sporting champions.”

The hosting of this championship signifies the state's growing capabilities and aspirations in the sports field.

Encouraging the young athletes, the Chief Minister expressed, “This championship is more than just a competition; it is a celebration of India’s sporting future. Compete with honour, discipline, and passion. Respect your opponents and embrace sportsmanship. Arunachal Pradesh stands with you, cheering for your dreams.”
