Former India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has thrown his weight behind a three-spinner strategy for the opening World Test Championship match against Sri Lanka, insisting that Ravindra Jadeja, Manav Suthar, and Kuldeep Yadav should all feature in the playing XI when the two-match series begins in Galle on 15 August.

Ashwin's Preferred XI

'Jadeja will definitely play. Manav Suthar took seven wickets in the last game — he'll play. And Kuldeep Yadav should also play. That makes three spinners. I think they should go with Saransh Jain at No. 7, which leaves — No. 5 Rishabh Pant, No. 4 Shubman Gill, No. 3 Devdutt Padikkal or Sai Sudharsan, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and KL Rahul. That leaves two fast-bowler spots,' Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.

The blueprint reflects conditions at Galle, a venue historically tilted in favour of slow bowlers, where turn, wind direction, and variable bounce have long rewarded spin-heavy line-ups. Ashwin's suggested combination would give India three distinct spin options — left-arm orthodox, left-arm orthodox from Suthar, and wrist-spin through Kuldeep — covering multiple angles of attack.

Jadeja's Return and Suthar's Retention

Ravindra Jadeja makes his return to the Test set-up after recovering from a tennis elbow injury that had sidelined him since the IPL earlier this year. His absence had been one of the more significant gaps in India's bowling attack across recent assignments. Manav Suthar retains his place on the back of an impressive previous outing, while Kuldeep Yadav's availability gives the team management a wrist-spin option that has troubled top-order batters in Asian conditions.

The Sai Sudharsan Question

Ashwin identified Sai Sudharsan's fitness as the most critical variable heading into the series. The 23-year-old left-hander struck two centuries on the recent India A tour of Sri Lanka, including one at Galle itself — a ground where reading the conditions takes considerable time to master.

'First, I think India's biggest loss here could be Sai Sudharsan's fitness because he scored two centuries recently in the India A series — one of them was at Galle, which has unique conditions. The wind, how the ball turns, the angles — it takes time to learn all that. But he made a hundred there. If he stays fit, it could be an advantage for India. His confidence will be high. And Sri Lanka always depend on spin — Sai Sudharsan is a good player of spin. So he could be useful. I hope he's fit, and it shouldn't be a setback,' Ashwin said.

Sudharsan, however, is reportedly carrying a niggle sustained ahead of the senior squad's departure, keeping his availability uncertain ahead of the first Test.

Padikkal as the Contingency

Should Sudharsan fail to recover in time, Ashwin pointed to Devdutt Padikkal as a credible alternative, though his preference remains unchanged. 'Devdutt Padikkal getting a chance in his place is not a bad thing. He has been a brilliant performer in domestic cricket. But I'd prefer Sudharsan to take his form into Test cricket,' he stated.

With the series forming part of the ongoing World Test Championship cycle, every point carries consequence for India's qualification prospects. The first Test in Galle on 15 August will be an early indicator of whether India's spin-heavy approach can deliver results away from home.
