Ahmedabad, Sep 30 (NationPress) Srihari Nataraj has once again proven his mettle for India by securing a bronze medal in the Men’s 100m Freestyle, elevating his total medal count to five. Meanwhile, Rohit Benedicton achieved a silver medal in the Men’s 50m Butterfly, contributing to India’s total of nine medals on Day Three of the 11th Asian Aquatics Championships held at Veer Savarkar Sports Complex on Tuesday.
Srihari has accumulated three medals in individual events and two in relays, continuing to spearhead India's performance in this prestigious event.
Competing in lane five during the Men's 100m Freestyle, Srihari executed a well-paced race. He turned third at the 50m mark, with Haoyu Wang from China (49.19) and Ali Tamer Hassan from Qatar (49.46) ahead, while Akash Mani (50.45) closely trailed in fourth. In the second lap, Srihari maintained his composure and rhythm, holding off competitors to clinch the bronze in 49.96 seconds.
“This season has been fruitful for me, and my training has been on point. I was quick during the heats, and given my preparations, I expected to swim faster. However, my competitors also delivered outstanding performances, and I am just grateful to have reached the podium,” Srihari remarked post-race.
“It’s an incredible feeling to walk out, finish the race, and participate in the victory ceremony. The crowd’s energy is electric. Our team is large, with numerous coaches and parents supporting us, and the past three days have been phenomenal. Typically, swimming is a quiet sport, but during the last 50m of yesterday’s relay, I could hear the crowd cheering us on, which was exhilarating,” he added.
In the Men’s 50m Butterfly, Rohit B Benedicton made a strong start and secured a silver medal with a time of 23.89, narrowly missing out to Adilbek Mussin of Kazakhstan, who finished first with 23.74.
Additionally, in the Women’s 100m Freestyle, Indian swimmers Dhinidhi Desinghu and Shashidhara Rujula reached the finals but were unable to place in the top half, finishing sixth and eighth, respectively.
