Birmingham, Aug 16 (NationPress) In a gripping encounter at Villa Park, Aston Villa managed to secure a goalless draw against Newcastle United during their inaugural match of the 2025/26 Premier League season, despite being reduced to ten players in the second half.

Newcastle showcased their attacking prowess in the first half, generating several scoring opportunities. Just two minutes into the game, debutant Anthony Elanga had a prime chance, but his shot was expertly saved by Marco Bizot, also making his debut for Villa. Anthony Gordon, adapting to a central forward role, was key in creating openings. He received a cross from Harvey Barnes but failed to convert, heading the ball over the bar.

Barnes remained active, delivering another cross that found Elanga at the far post, yet his volley went astray. Gordon later tested Bizot with a deflected attempt.

Villa appeared sluggish initially but showed improvement after halftime. Within a mere 90 seconds of the restart, Boubacar Kamara met John McGinn’s cross, but Nick Pope, chosen over new recruit Aaron Ramsdale, managed to catch the header. Morgan Rogers then assisted Ollie Watkins, whose shot was also saved by Pope.

The pivotal moment arrived in the 66th minute when Newcastle surged forward, with Elanga threading a brilliant pass to Gordon. As Gordon broke free, Ezri Konsa fouled him, leading to a straight red card from referee Craig Pawson.

Newcastle pressed for a winner, taking advantage of their numerical superiority. Barnes struck a volley that Matty Cash blocked, and the visitors maintained the pressure in a tense finish. Nevertheless, Villa's defense held firm, denying the Magpies a crucial goal.

Despite dominating possession and playing against ten men for over 25 minutes, Newcastle had to settle for a point, while Aston Villa emerged with a hard-earned draw to kick off their campaign.
