Indore, Oct 25 (NationPress) Australia’s acting captain Tahila McGrath praised spinner Alana King for her ‘extraordinary performance’ of 7-18, leading the team to a resounding seven-wicket victory over South Africa in the Women’s ODI World Cup match held at the Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore on Saturday.
Alana’s remarkable bowling display saw South Africa bowled out for just 97 runs, with Australia successfully chasing down the target in a swift 16.5 overs, securing the top position on the points table. Australia is set to face India in the second semifinal at DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on October 30.
“She was fantastic. Honestly, it was quite incredible. It felt like whenever she had the ball, something would happen - and it certainly did today. She consistently targeted the stumps, making us feel like every delivery could lead to a wicket. I’m thrilled for her. I’ve heard she broke several records - truly a remarkable performance,” said Tahila in the post-match interview.
“Yeah, she’s a bit of a game-changer for us this World Cup. Once the Power-play concluded, I had a brief discussion with Ash, and we both decided to bring her on. She took charge and delivered.”
During the chase for less than 100 runs, South Africa's Marizanne Kapp and Masabata Klaas provided an early shock by dismissing Phoebe Litchfield (5) and Ellyse Perry (0) within the first six overs, putting Australia under pressure.
However, Georgia Voll and Beth Mooney steadied the innings with a solid 76-run partnership that shifted the momentum back in favor of Australia. Just as they were nearing victory, Nadine de Klerk claimed Mooney’s wicket, but it was too late for South Africa to recover. Voll anchored the innings with an unbeaten 38 off 33 balls, including seven boundaries, leading Australia to a comfortable win.
“Our strategy was to bat with strong intent. The pitch appeared somewhat tricky, but playing with purpose paid off. That was our mindset. We lost a few early wickets, but the way “Volly” and “Moons” played was excellent. I often feel nervous on the sidelines - I’m not a great spectator! (Laughs) But it was fantastic to complete the task and gain momentum heading into the semifinals. (on facing India in the semis) Absolutely. We’ve played a lot at that venue and against India, especially lately. However, knockout matches are crucial - anything can happen. First job is done, qualifying. Second job is the knockouts - we’re genuinely looking forward to it,” Tahila commented on Australia’s chase.
