Each team consists of 15 players, including a few Indians, with 6 male and 8 female Australian players. Gus Dowdle, a team member, shared his joy and enthusiasm about visiting India and being part of this historical event.
“It’s a privilege to represent Australia, a great sporting nation. We are always eager to try new sports, and this is an incredible opportunity to showcase Australia’s values of fair play, competitiveness, and perseverance at the World Cup. I’ve learned that Kho Kho is a fast-paced and challenging game. It’s a lot of fun, and I’m really excited to participate in this global event,” he stated.
The sport is receiving significant backing from fans across the country, who are thrilled about the participation of an Australian team in this multi-nation tournament.
“We are experiencing tremendous support from the fans. They are all excited to learn that Australia has a team in the World Cup. For those familiar with Kho Kho, it's fantastic news, and for those discovering the sport, they are filled with excitement and pride to know that Australia is participating,” he added.
The Kho Kho Australia Federation is dedicated to fostering the sport in the country and building a competitive team. The long-term vision is to cultivate Kho Kho at the grassroots level to ensure sustainable growth. The introduction of an Indian-origin sport like Kho Kho in Australia creates opportunities for community interaction and cultural celebration.
Ojas Kulkarni, a vital member of the team with over a decade of experience in the game, remarked, “The social and emotional advantages of engaging in this culturally significant sport extend beyond physical health. It fosters inclusivity, respect for diversity, and mutual understanding among various communities. As these sports gain popularity, they become a bridge facilitating discussions about culture, identity, and community values.”
The teams have been diligently preparing and training for the upcoming World Cup. Each player receives a tailored fitness training regimen.
The players in the same city meet for training three times a week. Two sessions are focused on fitness and agility, while the weekend session aims at enhancing Kho Kho skills.
A total of 41 international teams from 24 countries across six continents will compete in this week-long mega event. As many as 21 men's and 20 women's teams from Europe, Oceania, Asia, Africa, North America, and South America will vie for the world title, which will be contested on a league-cum-knockout basis.
