Australian Open: Alcaraz Triumphs Over Shevchenko in First Round

Melbourne, Jan 13 (NationPress) Carlos Alcaraz, the champion of the 2022 US Open, launched his Australian Open 2025 quest with a decisive 6-1, 7-5, 6-1 victory over Alexander Shevchenko at the Rod Laver Arena on Monday.

Having already secured titles at the US Open, French Open, and Wimbledon, Alcaraz's entry into Australia is laden with expectations. A win at the Australian Open would not only solidify his legacy among tennis legends but also make him the youngest player in history to achieve the career Grand Slam - an accomplishment that took even the likes of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic years to realize.

In his half of the draw are Novak Djokovic, a 10-time Australian Open champion, and Alexander Zverev, who has recently shown a return to form.

In the first round against Alexander Shevchenko, Alcaraz quickly asserted his dominance. The Spaniard’s combination of raw power, impressive agility, and strategic gameplay overwhelmed his Russian rival right from the beginning.

During the first set, Alcaraz showcased his typical aggressive baseline style, notching up 12 winners against just 3 unforced errors.

Shevchenko found it challenging to maintain his serve, as Alcaraz converted 3 out of 4 break points to clinch the set 6-1 in merely 28 minutes.

The second set, however, revealed Shevchenko’s tenacity. The Russian elevated his game, serving more accurately and engaging Alcaraz in extended rallies. Despite this resistance, the Spaniard remained resolute, breaking Shevchenko late in the set to take it 7-5.

Fully energized, Alcaraz accelerated in the third set. He broke Shevchenko’s serve twice in quick succession, showcasing a flurry of forehand winners and skillful volleys to finish decisively at 6-1.

Alcaraz’s upcoming challenger, Yoshihito Nishioka from Japan, poses an intriguing test. Known for his defensive prowess, speed, and effective counterpunching, Nishioka thrives on upsetting aggressive players. However, Alcaraz aims to control the match, using his power and court coverage to dismantle Nishioka’s defenses.

Nishioka is a tough competitor; he doesn’t give you anything for free,” Alcaraz remarked. “I’ll need to remain focused and maintain my aggression.”
