Mike Hesson Clarifies Babar Azam's Status for Bangladesh ODIs Amid Squad Changes

Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 9 (NationPress) In a statement made on Monday, Pakistan's head coach Mike Hesson emphasized that senior batsman Babar Azam has not been “dropped” from the team for the upcoming ODI series against Bangladesh. He clarified that the recent squad adjustments were designed to provide opportunities for emerging talents.
The team for the series features a notable reshuffle, excluding several established players. Aside from Babar, all-rounder Saim Ayub, injured opener Fakhar Zaman, wicketkeeper-batter Haseebullah, spinner Mohammad Nawaz, and fast bowler Naseem Shah were also left out.
In their stead, six uncapped players have been introduced, including Sahibzada Farhan, Abdul Samad, Maaz Sadaqat, Muhammad Ghazi Ghori, Saad Masood, and Shamyl Hussain.
Regarding these changes, Hesson stated that the goal was to assess the bench strength rather than to eliminate specific players. “I don't think anyone has been explicitly dropped. As I mentioned, this is a fantastic chance for us to evaluate some younger talent,” he noted in the pre-match press conference.
He highlighted that Pakistan seldom finds openings in the international schedule to test new players due to the frequent lead-up to significant tournaments.
“We have limited opportunities within the calendar to provide several promising players with chances. You're either gearing up for a major event or just coming off one, so it depends on how many players debut in this series,” he elaborated.
Hesson underscored the commendable performances of various newcomers, particularly Farhan, who shone during the recent ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026.
“Many players have been around for a while and have awaited this chance. For instance, Sahibzada Farhan has certainly made his case with his outstanding performance in the T20 World Cup, but he has also excelled in domestic 50-over cricket,” he added.
He further commended other young talents in the squad, emphasizing their domestic achievements.
“Shamyl Hussain is a thrilling prospect, being the highest run-scorer in first-class cricket. He has been phenomenal and performed admirably for the Shaheens. Maaz Sadaqat has been on the verge for quite some time, so these are names that haven't had the chance to shine, and this series provides them with an opportunity to display their skills,” Hesson concluded.
This reshuffling of Pakistan’s squad follows their exit from the T20 World Cup prior to the semi-finals. Despite competitive performances, Pakistan fell short of qualification due to net run rate after failing to secure a decisive victory over New Zealand. The team also faced challenges against stronger opponents, suffering defeats against England and India.
