Mohammad Abbas Makes a Comeback as Pakistan Unveils XI for Boxing Day Test Against South Africa

Centurion, Dec 25 (NationPress) Pakistan has officially announced the inclusion of Mohammad Abbas, the 34-year-old pacer, in the starting XI for the inaugural Test of the two-match series against South Africa, which kicks off on December 26 at SuperSport Park. Abbas, a seasoned member of Pakistan's Test squad with an impressive tally of 90 wickets in 25 matches, last appeared in Test cricket in August 2021 against the West Indies in Kingston.

The batting order for the Centurion Test has experienced notable changes. Abdullah Shafique, who notched 132 runs in the home Test series versus England last October, has been omitted from the lineup. His recent struggles during the One-day International (ODI) series against South Africa, where he did not score in three matches, likely contributed to this decision.

Stepping into the opening slots are Shan Masood and Saim Ayub. Masood, with his wealth of experience, is expected to stabilize the innings, while Ayub, who recently scored two centuries in the ODI series against South Africa, adds youthful energy and form to the team. Another significant alteration in the batting order sees former captain Babar Azam returning to the No. 3 position, a role he last filled in December 2022 against England in Multan. Despite an average of 30 at No. 3 from 10 Tests, Babar’s consecutive fifties in the ODI series indicate he is poised to improve that statistic.

Fast bowler Khurram Shahzad makes a return after being absent for the Test series against England. Shahzad, who missed out due to an injury from the Bangladesh series, enhances the depth of a strong pace attack. The fast-bowling lineup features Shahzad, Abbas, Naseem Shah, and Aamer Jamal. Salman Agha serves as the only spin option and will take on considerable responsibility in the absence of a frontline spinner.

The middle order combines talent with reliability through Saud Shakeel, Mohammad Rizwan, and Kamran Ghulam. Shakeel has shown potential in stabilizing innings, while Rizwan’s dual role as wicketkeeper-batsman brings added versatility. Ghulam, recognized for his patience and determination, completes a lineup crafted to adapt to tough conditions.

Historically, South Africa has posed a significant challenge for Pakistan, with the latter winning only two out of 15 Tests played on their soil and losing 12. Compounding this issue, Pakistan has never secured a victory in a Boxing Day Test in South Africa, facing defeats in 2002 and 2018.
