New Delhi, May 19 (NationPress) Former Indian cricketer and coach Sanjay Bangar commended the Gujarat Titans’ top order for their remarkable consistency, particularly highlighting Shubman Gill’s maturity and Sai Sudharsan's astute shot selection during a commanding 10-wicket victory over the Delhi Capitals on Sunday.
In pursuit of 200 runs, GT's opening duo of Sudharsan and Gill remained unbeaten, successfully reaching their target with one over remaining. They concluded the innings at 205 for no loss, with Sudharsan achieving an impressive 108 not out, while Gill contributed significantly with 93 not out. Both players surpassed 600 runs this season, securing the top two positions in the Orange Cap standings.
Gill and Sudharsan became the second pair of batsmen to achieve two 200+ partnerships in T20 cricket, having previously scored 210 against CSK in Ahmedabad last year. The only other duo to accomplish this feat is the iconic AB de Villiers and Virat Kohli for Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
On JioHotstar, Bangar praised Gill's composure during the chase, emphasizing that the batter adapts his play to suit the situation.
“The top order has delivered an exceptional performance once again - how frequently have they achieved this? It’s astonishing how consistently they perform and complement one another. Over the past year and a half, Shubman has often played the role of supporting player, showcasing a remarkable evolution in his game. This has bolstered the lower order, as he now plays precisely according to the situation’s demands. Overall, it’s been fantastic,” he remarked.
Bangar also highlighted Sudharsan’s composed yet expansive approach to T20 batting, underlining his intelligent shot selection.
“What I admire about Sai Sudharsan’s batting - even in this format - is the control he demonstrates. When he aims to hit, the top hand handles much of the work, allowing the ball to bounce close to him, whether he’s playing in front or square of the wicket,” Bangar noted.
“Exhibiting such restraint during the initial six overs is challenging, but once he navigates through them, he unleashes lofted shots with equal confidence. His wagon wheel reflects runs across all areas - he doesn’t depend solely on one scoring zone. This versatility has become a hallmark of his batting, and he’s consistently delivering remarkable performances now,” he added.
Notably, the unbeaten opening partnership of 205 between Gill and Sudharsan marks the second instance of a team successfully chasing a 200+ target without losing a wicket in all T20 matches.
With this victory, GT has advanced alongside Punjab Kings and RCB to the knockout stage. These three teams will now focus on securing positions in the top two, which is crucial for earning a second chance to reach the finals.
