New Delhi, Jan 22 (NationPress) Following the International Cricket Council (ICC) announcement that the Men's T20 World Cup will go ahead as planned, Bangladesh's Youth and Sports Adviser Asif Nazrul expressed their dissatisfaction with the ICC's decision, asserting that there is no possibility of reversing their choice to abstain from matches in India.
“Our decision is final. We intend to present our proposal to the ICC for playing in Sri Lanka. Although they issued a 24-hour ultimatum, a global organization cannot impose such restrictions. The ICC will miss out on an audience of 200 million for the World Cup, which will be a significant loss for them... The ICC refers to Sri Lanka as co-hosts, but this is misleading; it's a hybrid model. Some statements made during the ICC meeting were astonishing,” Nazrul remarked after gathering with the Bangladesh team players and BCB officials in Dhaka.
Previously, Bangladesh had informed the ICC of their decision to refrain from traveling to India due to security issues, particularly in light of the worsening relations between the two countries, and had requested that their matches be shifted to Sri Lanka. Nevertheless, the ICC reaffirmed on Wednesday that the T20 World Cup would proceed as planned, with Bangladesh's games scheduled to occur in India.
The ICC Board emphasized that making changes so close to the event was impractical and that modifications in the absence of a credible security threat could set a dangerous precedent, jeopardizing the integrity of future ICC events while undermining its status as a neutral global governing body.
“The security landscape in India remains unchanged. Our concerns regarding security are based on genuine incidents, not baseless fears,” Nazrul added.
