Did ICC Deny BCB's Request to Move T20 WC Matches Out of India?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Jan 7 (NationPress) The International Cricket Council has reportedly notified the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) that their appeal to host Bangladesh’s World Cup matches outside of India due to security concerns has been denied.
Recently, the BCB made a formal appeal to the ICC to relocate all of Bangladesh's matches in the T20 World Cup away from India, citing escalating worries regarding the safety of their team.
On Tuesday, ICC officials and BCB representatives convened virtually, and as per an ESPNcricinfo report, the ICC clarified that Bangladesh must travel to India to meet their schedule or face the possibility of losing competition points.
However, the BCB asserted that no such warning or ultimatum was communicated to them. Additionally, an ICC insider indicated that a decision regarding the relocation of all Bangladesh matches has yet to be determined.
Neither the ICC nor the BCCI has released an official statement clarifying the outcome of the discussions.
This uncertainty arises with less than a month until the 20-team tournament kicks off on February 7. The event, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka, will run until March 8.
Bangladesh, placed in Group C, is scheduled to play their first three matches in Kolkata: against the West Indies on February 7, Italy on February 9, and England on February 14, concluding their group stage against Nepal in Mumbai on February 17.
The BCB's request to the ICC followed a directive from the BCCI to the IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders to release Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman, who was acquired for Rs 9.2 crore during the December auction. He was the only Bangladeshi player selected in the IPL 2026 auction.
