Dhaka, Jan 4 (NationPress) The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has officially reached out to the International Cricket Council (ICC) with a request to shift all of their matches in the 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup to locations outside of India due to pressing safety and security worries.

The BCB held an urgent board meeting on Sunday afternoon, following an earlier session via Zoom on Saturday evening. This was prompted by the release of Mustafizur Rahman from the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) roster for IPL 2025, on the direction of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), stemming from escalating tensions between India and Bangladesh.

“The Board thoroughly examined the situation, taking into account various developments over the last 24 hours, and expressed serious concerns regarding the circumstances affecting the Bangladesh National Team's participation in matches planned in India.

“After a careful evaluation of the current state and the increasing worries about the safety and security of the Bangladesh delegation in India, coupled with advice from the Bangladesh Government, the Board of Directors concluded that the Bangladesh National Team will not proceed to India for the tournament under these conditions.

“In response to this decision, the BCB has formally asked the ICC, as the organizing body for the event, to contemplate relocating all of Bangladesh’s matches to an alternative venue outside India,” the BCB stated in a comprehensive announcement on Sunday.

India and Sri Lanka are set to co-host the 2026 ICC Men's T20 World Cup from February 7 to March 8, with matches taking place at various venues across both nations.

Bangladesh's reluctance to compete in India poses a risk of disrupting the tournament's schedule, as their lineup includes games against the West Indies on February 7, Italy on February 9, and England on February 14 at Kolkata's Eden Gardens, in addition to a match against Nepal on February 17 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

“The Board believes that this action is essential for ensuring the safety and welfare of Bangladeshi players, team staff, board members, and other stakeholders, thereby allowing the team to participate in a secure environment. The Bangladesh Cricket Board anticipates the ICC’s understanding and an expedited response regarding this matter,” the BCB concluded.

Point of View

It's crucial to recognize the Bangladesh Cricket Board's stance on safety and security. Their decision reflects a broader concern for the welfare of athletes amidst rising tensions. While cricket fosters unity, such requests highlight the delicate balance of sports and geopolitical realities. It’s essential for governing bodies like the ICC to prioritize player safety while ensuring the integrity of the tournament.
