Did ICC Deny Bangladesh’s Request to Host T20 World Cup Matches Outside India?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Jan 7 (NationPress) The International Cricket Council (ICC) has reportedly communicated to the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) that their appeal to host Bangladesh’s World Cup matches outside of India, citing security concerns, has been rejected.
Last week, BCB officially sought the ICC's approval to relocate all of Bangladesh's T20 World Cup fixtures away from India, highlighting escalating worries about the safety of its players and staff.
During a virtual conference between ICC officials and BCB representatives on Tuesday, it was reported by ESPNcricinfo that the ICC indicated Bangladesh must travel to India to participate in their matches or face the possibility of losing competition points.
However, the BCB countered that no such ultimatum was presented to them. Furthermore, an ICC insider mentioned that no final verdict has been made regarding BCB's request to move all of Bangladesh's games to a location outside India.
As of now, neither the ICC nor the BCCI has provided an official comment clarifying the results of that meeting.
This situation arises with less than a month to go before the 20-team tournament kicks off on February 7, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka, running until March 8.
Bangladesh is in Group C and is scheduled to play their first three matches in Kolkata: facing the West Indies on February 7, Italy on February 9, and England on February 14, before wrapping up the group stage against Nepal in Mumbai on February 17.
The BCB’s request to the ICC was initiated following a directive from the BCCI to the IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders to release Bangladesh bowler Mustafizur Rahman, who was purchased for Rs 9.2 crore in the December auction. He was the only player from Bangladesh selected during the IPL 2026 auction.
