Johannesburg, Oct 16 (NationPress) - South Africa's Test captain Temba Bavuma has been included in the ‘A’ squad for the upcoming second red-ball match against India ‘A’, as part of his return-to-play program. This decision is a significant move in his preparations for the home Test series against India that is set to take place in November.
Bavuma has been sidelined from South Africa's current Test series against Pakistan due to a calf strain, an injury he picked up during the white-ball tour of England. He is now set to participate in the second match against India ‘A’, scheduled for November 6-9 at the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru.
Following the red-ball matches between India ‘A’ and South Africa ‘A’ from October 30 to November 9, both teams will face off in a three-match 50-over series at the Niranjan Shah Stadium in Rajkot from November 13-19. Marques Ackerman will captain the South Africa ‘A’ team in both formats.
Newcomer Kyle Simmonds has received his first call-up to the four-day squad, while all-rounder Delano Potgieter has been selected for the 50-over team for the first time. The 50-over squad includes Proteas players Ottneil Baartman, Bjorn Fortuin, Kwena Maphaka, Lhuan-dré Pretorius, and Nqaba Peter.
Malibongwe Maketa will serve as head coach for the red-ball matches, while Wandile Gwavu will oversee the 50-over games. “We are excited about this tour and ready to face the challenge of competing against India in their territory. Our skills in playing and bowling spin have improved significantly, so this experience will be beneficial for many players,” Gwavu stated.
“As a team, we are prepared for this opportunity. It has been quite some time since South Africa A last visited India, and playing there requires adaptability and mental resilience. Gaining experience on subcontinent pitches and adjusting to various conditions, especially in the red-ball format, will be crucial as we aim for future tours and possible Proteas selection,” Gwavu added.
South Africa ‘A’ heads to India following a competitive series against New Zealand A, where they won the one-day series 2-1 but lost the four-day series 0-1.
The South Africa ‘A’ four-day squad will depart for Bengaluru from OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg on October 25, ahead of the first red-ball match from October 30 to November 2.
