Melbourne, June 19 (NationPress) The Big Bash League (BBL) overseas draft witnessed an exciting showcase of talent as Pakistani stars Shaheen Shah Afridi, Mohammad Rizwan, and Haris Rauf emerged as the most coveted selections, with Afridi clinching the top spot overall on Thursday. A total of seven players from Pakistan found new homes in the draft.

All teams in the BBL overseas draft had their sights set on Afridi, who participated in the draft for the first time, fully available for the season. The Brisbane Heat, holding the overall first pick, quickly secured the left-arm fast bowler, enhancing their already potent bowling attack that includes Spencer Johnson, Michael Neser, and Xavier Bartlett.

Haris Rauf will continue his stint with the Melbourne Stars after the team utilized their retention pick to keep him away from the Adelaide Strikers, who were keen on him with the second pick.

Mohammad Rizwan was chosen fourth by the Melbourne Renegades, despite the team already having signed up the dynamic wicketkeeper-batter Tim Seifert.

The Adelaide Strikers surprised many by using their third pick to draft England's left-arm pacer Luke Wood after missing out on Rauf. This allowed another English player, Sam Curran, to join the Sydney Sixers at the seventh pick, while the Sydney Thunder retained Lockie Ferguson at pick eight.

The Perth Scorchers and Hobart Hurricanes both confirmed their pre-signings in the first round: Finn Allen and Chris Jordan, respectively.

The Renegades made a daring choice with their second pick at No. 11, selecting Hassan Khan, an uncapped allrounder from the USA. Khan, who previously played one game for the Renegades last season, has been a standout performer early in the MLC for the San Francisco Unicorns, a franchise managed by Cricket Victoria’s high-performance unit.

Sydney Thunder traded in the second round to acquire Shadab Khan with pick No. 12. This marks Shadab’s fourth appearance with a BBL franchise, following his tenures with Brisbane Heat (2017), Sydney Sixers (2021–22), and Hobart Hurricanes (2022–23).

Rishad Hossain was the sole Bangladeshi player picked, going to the Hurricanes at No. 13. Although chosen last season, he was withdrawn due to not receiving an NOC.

The Hurricanes bolstered their spin department by drafting England’s leg-spin allrounder Rehan Ahmed in the fourth round. Meanwhile, Laurie Evans and David Payne will return to the Perth Scorchers, where they previously won BBL titles, after playing for the Renegades and Strikers last season.

The Strikers also added notable Pakistani pacer Hasan Ali in the third round. England wicketkeeper-batter Tom Alsop is set to return to the Brisbane Heat, and leg-spinner Jafer Chohan will rejoin the Sydney Sixers after being a surprise pick in last year’s draft.
