New Delhi, April 28 (NationPress) IPL chairman Arun Dhumal has stated that the BCCI is contemplating a shift to a full home-and-away format for the league, expanding to a total of 94 matches starting from the next media rights cycle in 2028. Currently, the IPL operates under a 74-match format, which was introduced with the addition of the Gujarat Titans (GT) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in 2022.
"This certainly presents a remarkable opportunity. We have had discussions within the ICC and internally at BCCI. As the interest of fans evolves concerning bilateral and ICC events, as well as in franchise and T20 cricket, we need to seriously consider how we can maximize value for all stakeholders involved in the game," said Dhumal.
"We ideally want to create a larger window, potentially increasing from 74 to 84 or 94 matches. This way, every team can compete against one another both at home and away, which necessitates 94 games," Dhumal was reported by ESPNCricinfo on Monday.
Discussions had also taken place about increasing the IPL to 84 matches for the ongoing season, but this was postponed due to scheduling conflicts. "Considering our commitments to bilateral cricket and ICC events, moving from 74 to 84 may not be feasible in the immediate future. However, as the landscape evolves, we may explore that option," he added.
"With the plethora of cricket: returning from a Test series in Australia, participating in the Champions Trophy, and now the ongoing IPL, we concluded that transitioning from 74 to 84 in 2025 doesn't make sense. We will make a decision when the timing is right," stated Dhumal.
He also confirmed there are no current plans to introduce additional IPL teams, stating, "Ten teams is an adequate number for now. The focus should remain on the tournament's popularity and the quality of cricket played. I don't foresee any changes in the short term. As the landscape continues to evolve, we will reassess accordingly."
Dhumal expressed hope for the IPL to see a first-time champion this season, referencing teams like Delhi Capitals (DC), Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), Punjab Kings (PBKS), and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), all of whom have yet to claim an IPL trophy but are in strong playoff contention.
"The tournament continues to grow every year. We are thrilled with the fan engagement, and our broadcast and in-stadia numbers are exceptionally high. We aim to make this edition, the 18th, truly special. We are confident it will keep flourishing as it has over the last 17 years."
"I definitely wish for a new team to lift the trophy this year. While DC has performed admirably in recent years without winning, Punjab Kings have reached a final, and RCB has had its moments of success.
"If these teams find themselves facing off in the final, we can be sure there will be a new champion, which would make me very happy for the tournament."
