Lalit Modi Supports IPL Chairman Dhumal's Expansion Plans
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 4 (NationPress) Lalit Modi has expressed his support for Arun Singh Dhumal, the chairman of the Indian Premier League (IPL), regarding the proposal to extend the IPL window. This comes as discussions intensify about reshaping the global cricket calendar in the post-2027 era.
Dhumal previously mentioned that the IPL operates under a 74-match format, and he believes there is potential for future expansion of the tournament, particularly as the popularity of bilateral cricket diminishes. He pointed out that franchises like The Hundred, Big Bash League, and SA20 reflect a broader trend towards league-based competitions.
“Observing the shift in interest over recent years, there is undeniably a decline in engagement with certain bilateral matches,” Dhumal stated in an interview with The Times network.
In response, Modi tweeted on X, saying, “I told u so,” showing his endorsement of Dhumal’s vision for an expanded IPL window in the coming years.
Nonetheless, Dhumal recognized that the current international calendar is fixed until 2027, which restricts immediate changes. “The bilateral calendar is structured until 2027, making it challenging for immediate expansion. However, once we plan for the period post-2027, discussions will occur… Ideally, we will establish a larger window to facilitate an extension beyond 74 matches,” he said.
He also proposed potential solutions, such as decreasing bilateral commitments or finding new openings in the global schedule. “There are various options. One is to reduce some bilateral matches, and another is to create a new window elsewhere in the schedule… We will explore all viable options and implement what works best,” he added.
Highlighting the IPL’s increasing global impact, Dhumal remarked, “It’s not solely about the IPL; this represents a new order in cricket: fewer bilateral matches, more league cricket, interspersed with ICC events, similar to football.”
