New Delhi, Oct 14 (NationPress) The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) committed a significant blunder on the inaugural day of the Ranji Trophy 2025/26 season, resulting in a confusion involving Mumbai cricketers and brothers Sarfaraz Khan and Musheer Khan.
The mix-up transpired during Mumbai's match against Jammu and Kashmir at the Sher-e-Kashmir Cricket Stadium in Srinagar. Initially, the official scorecard on the BCCI website mistakenly identified Sarfaraz Khan as the opening batter, falsely noting that he was dismissed for a duck by fast bowler Auqib Nabi.
This led to bewilderment among supporters, as Sarfaraz typically plays in the middle order and is not recognized for opening the innings. It was subsequently clarified that it was actually Musheer Khan, the younger sibling of Sarfaraz, who had opened the batting and was out on the third delivery of the match.
The BCCI corrected the scorecard error after some delay, but the confusion had already taken root. Sarfaraz later batted at his regular position, coming in at No. 5.
After Musheer was dismissed for a three-ball duck, Ayush Mhatre (28) and Ajinkya Rahane (27) formed a 61-run partnership for the second wicket before Ayush was dismissed. Ajinkya followed shortly after. Sarfaraz was run out after scoring 42 runs off 48 balls, which included six boundaries and one maximum.
Siddhesh Lad and Shams Mulani are currently at the crease with scores of 86 and 23, respectively, as Mumbai reached 302/5.
The Ranji Trophy 2025-26 season, India’s premier domestic red-ball tournament, commenced on Wednesday, featuring 38 teams competing nationwide. This 91st edition of the Ranji Trophy will culminate on February 24, 2026. Vidarbha is the defending champion, having claimed victory against Kerala in the previous final.
Mumbai kicks off their journey in the Ranji Trophy for the 2025-26 season with aspirations to secure another title to add to their impressive tally of 42.
