Beauty Dungdung: A Young Hockey Star’s Journey Through Loss and Resilience
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bengaluru, Feb 26 (NationPress) At just 22 years old, Beauty Dungdung carries an immense load. She is currently immersed in rigorous training at the national camp for the Indian Women’s Hockey Team in Bengaluru. Yet, her return to the field has proven to be her greatest challenge to date.
Reflecting on her journey, Beauty states, "It took me nearly two years to recover," as she recalls the severe knee injury she sustained in 2023. The months spent in rehabilitation were filled with uncertainty about her future as a player for India. However, the physical discomfort paled in comparison to the emotional turmoil she faced off the field. Tragically, during this difficult recovery phase, she also experienced the loss of her father.
"My father passed away while I was injured. I found myself constantly traveling between home and the training camp, with so much happening simultaneously," she shares. "There were moments when I seriously doubted whether a comeback was even possible."
Her father was not only her biggest supporter but also her hero. Growing up in a small village in Jharkhand, they endured ongoing financial hardships. At the tender age of five, he made her first hockey stick from bamboo because they couldn't afford a proper one. Later, he took on various jobs across different states as a daily wage laborer, all to nurture her sporting aspirations.
“When my father was around, I had plenty of support,” Beauty reflects softly. “Now, I have to handle everything on my own.”
Today, she is the backbone of her family. Through her employment at Indian Oil, Beauty manages household duties, supports her brother's family, and funds the education of her young niece and nephews. Most heart-wrenching is her responsibility towards her mother, who is partially paralyzed and suffers from memory loss.
“It can be overwhelming at times since my mother’s memory is deteriorating. She forgets things easily,” Beauty confesses. “I find myself explaining things repeatedly, and she still asks, ‘When will you come home?’ My thoughts inevitably drift to her when I’m away.”
Juggling the intense demands of international hockey along with the emotional weight of her home life is no small feat. Yet, Beauty remains resolute.
“If I dwell too much on my worries, I’ll be the one who suffers, so I concentrate all my energy on the game. It brings me joy to support my family financially. I strive to balance both aspects,” she elaborates.
Whenever she feels burdened by sadness, she finds solace in her hockey teammates. “I confide in my friends on the team. Before a match, if I’m feeling down, I candidly tell them that I’m not in a great mood today, and they motivate me. The team truly uplifts me.”
Gradually, Beauty is finding her rhythm again. She returned to the field for the Asian Champions Trophy and the recent Hero Hockey India League. Now back in the national camp, she is diligently preparing for the crucial FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 Qualifiers in Hyderabad, Telangana. Known for her exceptional speed and receiving skills, she is focused on rebuilding her confidence in the striking circle.
Beauty Dungdung is now more than just a young athlete enjoying hockey; each time she picks up her stick, she plays for her mother’s support, her family’s future, and in memory of her father, who crafted her first bamboo hockey stick.
